Setting Standards for Sustainable Design

EDC attended the BSI Sustainable Design Forum organised in partnership with the Design Council to gain insight into current thinking on sustainable design and explore new network opportunities. The forum held 10th June 2008 was intended to help shape the direction the UK should take in regard to future standardization in sustainable design.

The event brought together speakers from throughout the UK to discuss their experiences in researching and implementing sustainable design practice. The event also included presentations outlining existing related standards and break out workshops to ensure full audience participation.

The event reinforced the need for business and policy makers to seriously embrace sustainable thinking and practice. Crucially it highlighted an urgent need to move current thinking forward, to ensure that all stakeholders recognize that sustainable design (or ecodesign) is simply good design, and not an optional extra.

As a follow on to this event it would be a useful exercise to ask a selection of designers from a range of disciplines “do you want a standard for sustainable design?”
